Jefferson county school board
In Jefferson County, there are seven seats on the Board of Education. All are non-partisan, and voters elect representation based on where they live. This year, four seats are on the ballot, and only two of those races are contested.
One of those contested races is the District 6 seat, which is currently held by Lisa Willner. Willner is giving up the seat in a bid for the Kentucky statehouse.
Here are some of their responses; answers have been edited for clarity. And the reason I want to run for the board is to be an advocate for the students in the school — and not just the sixth district but citywide.
My focus in this race is trying to spur more parental and community engagement. I think the teachers work hard every day. I believe that administrators at the board and other stakeholders work hard every day.
I think we can do a lot more if we can build a larger coalition of people supportive of what happens in the classroom and in the school building. I look forward to this rigorous debate. I welcome you to check out my website. I value looking into our classrooms to find ways to create better citizens. Lisa Willner has begun in the sixth district on our board of education. I believe that every school in Jefferson County can be an excellent school.
I think that with the right minds at the table, with us finding creative strategies to ensure that every school gets the resources that it needs that we certainly can have the best school district in the United States of America. As you said at the beginning, this is a large district, there are a lot of different systems at play.My tormented heart lyrics
So as we talk about the good work that was done in the past, I think that new blood, new perspectives, new communication and new connections need to be brought to the table.
Also our children with special needs have began to be factored into that achievement gap. I think that by broadly implementing rich and deep educational strategies, making our classrooms teacher-centered again. Our teachers understand how to make their classrooms come alive and therefore they should be treated as professionals and allowed the resources that they need to ensure that every child is learning, that every child is rising to the level where they can maximize their potential.
And so I think that the ratio that that the achievement gap — often based on lines of race and special needs — is an issue that we need to forcefully and valiantly up again, to focus our attention on. And also I think a challenge would be well-received if we can give them more toward a skill-learned setting to learn more than just reading a book and learning more.

I believe that charter schools could be an important part of the mix going forward. Right now, Jefferson County Public Schools has about an 80 percent stake hold in education in this county.

Connections to the district: Parent of two Jeffco students. Running for the Jeffco board of education is the culmination of my lived experiences as a parent, as a school advocate, as a district volunteer, and as a higher education professional.
The board of education plays a critical role in allocating resources to budget priorities and in providing vision and governance to the district. My service through boards of directors and running a nonprofit organization for the past 20 years has made it clear that budgets are a statement of values. I look forward to bringing values centered around educational equity, engaged and connected learning for students, and support for educators and support staff to the Jeffco board of education so that we can keep the district moving forward.
I was raised by a single mom who worked two jobs, sometimes leaving for work before I was up and coming home after I had fallen asleep. With that background, I know how to do research, look at all sides, and come to the best outcome.
With Stober being my neighborhood school, I was upset when the district began talking about closing schools. I was surprised when I saw my own neighborhood school on that list. Pleasant View Elementary, a Golden area school was the only school that was closed. In a community where stability may be hard to come by, Pleasant View was a foundation. Some of those parents were in similar situations as MY mom was and would not have been able to take off work and rally to save the school.
With the moratorium on school closures lifted, this is something I am deeply concerned about. Connections to the district: Granddaughter attends Rose Stein Elementary and daughter attended Jeffco schools. Principal in Jeffco from to and former teacher.#WeAreJCPS -- NTI
Member of the district accountability committee, former Creighton Middle school accountability committee member and classroom volunteer. Since then, I have served many roles in the district, that of parent, teacher, principal, community member and grandparent.
I will bring a vast wealth of experience and perspective to this position. And our SAT scores are falling. We need a well-managed and strongly governed district that efficiently uses a billion dollars in annual revenue to prepare all students for college and career success in the 21st century. We also need to ensure we effectively partner with parents, employers, and community organizations, and attract and retain a highly talented and deeply engaged staff.
We must provide them with the classroom resources, professional development, and leadership they need to create a high-performance culture.
My children were beneficiaries of this dynamic educational environment and I want that for all students in Jeffco. Log In Membership Newsletters Obituaries.

With at-risk kids, with our minorities, I think concentrating on those kinds of things that they would be interested in. Something that a black teacher can relate with a black child — we need more of that.
I think that plans have to be addressed for each school individually. I think that we have to look at real solutions for each of the schools based upon the needs that they present, what techniques, talent, what curriculum would be best in setting that school up for success.
